Other things you can crimp

Sports injuries can feel like the end of the world. There’s a bit of a rejected love song ring to it: the thing you love hurt you, now you have to stay away from the thing you love.

My song would probably go like this… I love crimping but I crimped too much. Crimps hurt my fingers and now I can’t crimp anymore. What’s the point in a life without crimps?

But if there’s one thing that a sports injury can teach you, it’s that there’s a world beyond the thing you love. Or to be more specific, there are loads of other things that you can crimp without hurting your fingers.

If you’re injured and can’t crimp tiny edges, why not stay home and crimp some of these things instead?

  1. Your hair: not quite as physically intense but just as time consuming as session of crimping at the crag and you’ll look like a lion at the end of it all.
  2. The edges of pies: many styles of crimp exist with equally satisfying names… the Classic Finger Crimp, the Tiny Crimp, the Rope Crimp, the Scalloped Edge, the Crimp ‘N’ Fork, the Crosshatch Crimp, the Checkerboard Crimp.
  3. The ends of wires: sometimes you need to crimp (that is, deform) the ends of wires to join them together. You may also crimp an electrical connector to join it to a wire… This kind of feels like a far more practical skill than actual crimping.*
  4. Leather cord: you can crimp the ends when making jewellry.
  5. A theory: (ie. put a crimp in a theory). There is little more satisfying that finding flaws in other people’s logic from the comfort of the sofa.
  6. Words: a social crimp: synchronise and improvise with your friends like in the Mighty Boosh. See video for details.

International crimping

We’re not the only crimpers in the world – in the Netherlands you can Krimpen too. I don’t speak Dutch, but from what I’ve gathered you can Krimpen quite a lot of things…

Ze krimpen en trekken zich terug ~~ Sommige zijn al helemaal verdwenen. – They’re both shrinking and retreating – and some of them have disappeared altogether!

What fun!

Life without crimping can be tough, but thank goodness crimping isn’t the only thing you can enjoy!

*Correct me if I’m wrong, I know nothing of wires.
