Things I could do instead of being on the M1.

According to the number people, the average commute to work in the UK is 1 hour each way. This means many of you, like me, spend 10 hours getting to work and back each week. (That’s over 20 days a year). I am very grateful for the car sharing.

Here are some of the things that I could have done in that 10 hours had I not decided to live an hour away from my work. Feel free to share your suggestions, I’m making a bucket list:

  • Drive from Sheffield to Fontainebleau.
  • Climb the Nose, El Cap, 5 times if you’re Alex Honnold and Tommy Caldwell.
Or, if you’re human, climb a big epic multi-pitch in the Verdon Gorge.
  • Watch all the Lord of the Rings films with snack breaks and debriefs.
  • This 26 mile six dales walk in the Peak District, which looks well more enjoyable that sitting in a car on the M1.
  • Finally complete the 10 hour Jurassic park theme song challenge
  • Or the Spongebob trap 10 hour remix, if you really hate yourself.
  • Half a 2-day mountain marathon, with some time for poor navigation and getting lost.
  • Learn to land and fly a plane supervised. This is the minimum time required so you’d have to be pretty switched on, but still…
  • Fly to Vancouver from London Heathrow. Not yourself in the mini-plane you just learned to fly, maybe go BA.

Obviously I’d have done all this stuff had I not been busy commuting.

Well, maybe. More likely I’d have just binge watched Adventure Time.

(Incidentally, there are 187 episodes of Adventure Time and each one is 11 minutes long. So I could watch it all in just 3.5 weeks worth of commuting.)

PS. I was inspired by my work time log to log my weekdays. Here’s where my waking hours go…
